Kalki 2898 AD is an eagerly anticipated Indian epic dystopian science-fiction action film. Written and directed by Nag Ashwin, this cinematic marvel is produced by C. Aswani Dutt under Vyjayanthi Movies. Primarily filmed in Telugu, some scenes were reshot in Hindi to cater to a broader audience. Drawing inspiration from Hindu scriptures, the film envisions a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD. This is the first installment in the planned Kalki Cinematic Universe.

Announcement and Delays

First announced in February 2020, Kalki 2898 AD faced significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production was halted for a year, pushing the commencement of filming to July 2021. The shoot took place on a futuristic set at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, and continued intermittently over three years, wrapping up in March 2024. With a staggering budget of ₹600 crore (US$72 million), it stands as the second most expensive Indian film, following Adipurush.

Release Date

Initially set for release on 9 May 2024, the film’s debut was postponed due to the 2024 Indian general election. Kalki 2898 AD is now scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 27 June 2024, available in IMAX and various other formats.

Music and Visuals

The film’s music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, with cinematography by Djordje Stojiljkovic. The production design is crafted by Nitin Zihani Choudhary, and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao handles the editing, ensuring a visually and aurally immersive experience.

Plot Overview

Set in a dystopian future in the desertified city of Kasi in 2898 AD, the only known surviving city, Kalki 2898 AD explores a world ruled by a totalitarian elite, Supreme Yaskin, who governs from a hovering megastructure called the Complex. The film spans millennia, beginning with the events of the Mahabharata in 3102 BC, marking the start of Kali Yuga, and continuing to 2898 CE. The central narrative focuses on the mysterious figure of Kalki, the tenth and final avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu.
